The Marrakech to Merzouga route is roughly 560 km and 9–10 driving hours across the High Atlas — which is why it is sold as a 3-day loop, and why it is the best road trip in Morocco. This guide walks the route stop by stop, whether you take the classic tour or do it independently by bus.

Day 1: over the Atlas to the Dades Gorge
Leave Marrakech early — the Tichka switchbacks reward morning light and punish afternoon traffic. Ait Benhaddou is the essential stop: cross the river, climb through the mud-brick lanes to the granary, ignore the film-location trivia and look at the thing itself. Push on past Ouarzazate and the Skoura palmery to sleep in the Dades Gorge, where the canyon walls turn copper at dusk.
Day 2: gorges, palm groves, and into the dunes
Todra Gorge first — a short walk between 300-metre walls while the morning is cool. Then the long, easy run through the Tafilalt: palm groves, ksour, and the desert arriving by degrees until Erg Chebbi lifts off the horizon like a wall. In Merzouga you swap van for camel; ninety minutes later you are dropping your bag in a camp as the dunes go orange.
You do not arrive at the Sahara. It assembles itself around you, one shade of orange at a time.

Day 3: dawn, and the long road home
Climb the nearest ridge before sunrise — the cold is temporary, the light is not. After breakfast the route reverses in one long day back to Marrakech, or better: continue north to Fes via the Ziz Valley and skip the repeat (see the 10-day itinerary).
Doing it independently
The Supratours bus runs Marrakech → Merzouga daily (≈250 MAD, 12–13 h) — book a day ahead, ask your camp to collect you in the village. You lose the roadside stops but gain freedom: two or three nights in the dunes, day trips to Khamlia and Rissani, and the bus back whenever you choose. Can you drive Marrakech to Merzouga in one day?
Physically yes — 9–10 hours nonstop — and it wastes the best road in Morocco. Every worthwhile stop lies between the two, which is why even independent drivers break it in the Dades or Skoura.
Which stop is skippable if time is tight?
Ouarzazate’s film studios. Ait Benhaddou and Todra Gorge are not — they are the route’s two non-negotiables besides the dunes themselves.
Is the route better from Marrakech or Fes?
Marrakech has the richer road (kasbahs, gorges); Fes is closer in raw hours (≈10 h via the Ziz Valley) but plainer. Best of all: enter from Marrakech, exit to Fes — no backtracking.
