Merzouga or Zagora — which desert should you choose?
Choose Merzouga if you want the Sahara of the photographs — the 150-metre orange dunes of Erg Chebbi. Choose Zagora only if you are truly short on time: it is a day closer to Marrakech, but its desert is flat, stony hamada with modest dunes. Nearly everyone who takes the 2-day Zagora tour wishes they had taken the 3-day Merzouga one.

How many nights do you need in the desert?
Two nights. With one night you reach camp at sunset, sleep, and ride out at dawn — the desert becomes a photo stop. With two, you have a full day among the dunes: climb the big ridge, visit the Gnawa musicians in Khamlia, watch the light change without a bus waiting. How do you get to Erg Chebbi?
- Supratours bus (independent, cheapest): Marrakech → Merzouga daily, ≈12–13 hours, book a day ahead. Camps collect you in the village.
- Shared 3-day tour (most common): minivan via Ait Benhaddou, Todra Gorge and the Draa Valley, camel trek included. Judge operators by group size and camp quality, not the brochure.
- Self-drive: good sealed roads the whole way; break the drive in Skoura or the Dades Gorge and arrive with daylight.

What is a night in a desert camp actually like?
You ride out an hour or so by camel as the light goes orange, drop your bag in a tent, and climb the nearest ridge for sunset. Dinner is tagine and drums around a fire; then the generator cuts and the sky does the thing no photograph has ever captured. Dawn is cold, silent and the reason you came.

When should you go to the Sahara?
October to April. Days sit between 20–30°C and the light is clean. December and January nights drop near freezing — camps provide blankets, but pack a warm layer. July and August reach 40–45°C and most good camps scale down; do not book the dunes in midsummer.
Do you need a tour to visit the Sahara in Morocco?
No. The Supratours bus runs daily from Marrakech to Merzouga (about 12–13 hours), and any camp will collect you from the village. Tours exist for convenience, not necessity — the independent route costs less and lets you stay longer.
How long is the camel trek to the camp?
Usually 1 to 1.5 hours each way at Erg Chebbi. If your back or knees would rather not, most camps can drive you in by 4×4 for the same price — ask when booking.
Is the Sahara cold at night?
In winter, yes — December and January nights can approach 0°C. Camps supply heavy blankets; bring a fleece, a hat and warm socks. Spring and autumn nights are mild.
What should you pack for a desert night?

Yes — the 4×4 transfer option skips the camel ride, comfort camps have real beds and bathrooms, and the itinerary adapts easily. The long driving days are the hardest part; break the route over an extra day.
