October is the best all-round month to visit Morocco — warm but not hot cities, a desert at its absolute finest, clear golden light, and the countryside still glowing from the harvest. If you asked me to pick one month for a first trip taking in Marrakech, the Atlas and the Sahara, this is it. The only catch is that plenty of people have worked that out too.
October weather, region by region
| Region | Day | Night | The feel |
|---|---|---|---|
| Marrakech | 27–30°C | 15°C | Warm, easy, perfect for walking |
| High Atlas | 18–22°C | 7°C | Clear, stable, great trekking |
| Sahara (Merzouga) | 30°C | 15°C | Ideal — the desert at its best |
| Coast (Essaouira) | 23°C | 16°C | Warm, calm, lovely |
What is on
Late October brings the date harvest festival in Erfoud, gateway to the dunes — a few days celebrating the Tafilalt’s date crop with markets, music and every variety you can imagine. It is a fitting thing to catch on the way to Merzouga, and a reminder that the desert edge is farmland as much as sand.
Crowds and prices
Back into high season — October’s near-perfect weather pulls the crowds and the year’s higher prices. It is nowhere near overwhelming, but do book desert camps and popular riads a couple of weeks ahead, especially around the school half-term.
Who October suits
Almost everyone — first-timers, desert travellers, trekkers, photographers chasing that golden autumn light. The only people who might prefer another month are those hunting rock-bottom prices or total solitude, who will do better in November or the depths of winter.
October rewards a proper plan — start at the Morocco travel guide, pick your route from the itineraries hub, and book the dunes early.
Is October the best month to visit Morocco?
For an all-round first trip, yes — warm cities, a desert in perfect condition and clear autumn light, all at once. Its only real rival is spring, and October edges it for reliable desert weather.
How good is the Sahara in October?
About as good as it gets — 30°C days and mild 15°C nights at Merzouga mean comfortable camel treks and camp nights you do not have to armour up for. Book ahead, as it is popular.
Is Morocco busy in October?
Yes, it is high season again, though not as intense as April. Reserve desert trips and sought-after riads a couple of weeks out and you will be fine.
October is one of twelve verdicts — compare it against the rest in Morocco month by month.
